The Garden Grove man arrested for allegedly firing 54 shots at the Fashion Island outdoor mall in Newport Beach will be held without bail, at least until his arraignment on Jan. 11.
Marcos Sarinana Gurrola, 42, was charged last week with 54 counts of discharging a gun in public, and two counts of assault because a mother and her 4-year-old daughter were knocked down and injured as they fled.
If convicted on all accounts, the suspect could face a maximum sentence of 115 years in state prison.
The former security guard was also charged in the Santa Ana courtroom with 10 more counts after prosecutors linked him to a similar shooting in 2011 in the same mall. No one was hit in either incident.
A police detective said Gurrola told him he discharged the gun because “it made him feel better.” Gurrola has not yet entered a plea.
The most recent incident occurred on Saturday, Dec. 15 outside the Macy’s department store parking lot. The earlier shootings took place on Nov. 16, 2011.
