The CIF Southern Section basketball playoffs are underway with many local teams participating.
Although no local teams are high seeds, three are ranked in the final CIF polls. Pacifica is rated 10th in the 3AA boys’ poll. Westminster is 10th is ninth in the 1A girls poll and Orangewood Academy is 11th in Division 4A.
Some playoff games started Wednesday (results too late for our print deadline; for scores go to www.ggjournal.com) with most starting today (Thursday) and Friday. Most second round games are Friday.
Here are the first round pairings involved schools serving the Garden Grove-Stanton-Westminster area.
Boys Division 2AA: Thousand Oaks at Westminster (Friday).
Boys Division 2A: Tesoro at Garden Grove, Western at Don Lugo (Friday).
Boys Division 3AAA: La Quinta at Colony, Brea Olinda at Santiago (Wednesday).
Boys Division 3AA: Bolsa Grande at Atascadero, Rancho Alamitos at Corona del Ma, Temescal Canyon at Pacifica, Los Amigos at Damien (Wednesday).
Boys Division 5A: Orangewood Academy at Tarbut V Torah.
Girls Division 1A: Lakewood at Westminster (Saturday).
Girls Division 3AAA: Royal at Rancho Alamitos, La Quinta at El Dorado, Glendora at Los Amigos (Thursday).
Girls Division 3AA: Pacifica at San Juan Hills, Magnolia at South Hills (Thursday).
Girls Division 4A: Bassett at Orangewood Academy (Thursday).
Girls Division 6: New Harvest at Crystal Cathedral (Thursday).
League play concluded last week. Pacifica and Western tied for third in the Empire League boys’ race. Santiago finished as the Garden Grove League champ, with Garden Grove a game back and La Quinta in third. In the Golden West League boys’ race, Westminster finished third and Orange sixth.
Magnolia was fifth in the Orange League for boys and Orangewood fifth in the San Joaquin League.
In girls basketball action, Western was third in the Empire and Pacifica sixth. Los Amigos won the Garden Grove League crown, with Rancho Alamitos second and La Quinta third.
Golden West play saw Westminster in first and Orange fourth. In the Orange League, Magnolia finished fourth.
In the San Joaquin League, Orangewood finished second, losing in league only to league champion Fairmont Prep. Crystal Cathedral finished third in the Express League.
