It wasn’t exactly a blowout, but it came close. Nearly all the winter sports teams from high schools in the Garden Grove-Stanton-Westminster area got knocked out in the first round, with just a handful surviving.
Many of those are involved in second-round games played Wednesday (results too late for our print deadline). In boys’ soccer Division 5, Los Amigos visited Saddleback. In Division 6 girls’ water polo, Pacifica met Culver City at Santa Ana Valley High.
Last Wednesday in boys basketball, Garden Grove League champion Santiago lost 76-41 to Brea Olinda. Pacifica, the top-ranked team in the GG area, lost 49-45 to Temescal Canyon.
Atascadero defeated Bolsa Grande 79-35, but Orangewood did outlast Tarbut V Torah 56-48.
Last Thursday in girls’ play, Orangewood defeated Bassett 43-39 in Division 4A and Crystal Cathedral bested Los Angeles Adventist Academy 32-31 in Division 6.
But Los Amigos, Rancho Alamitos, Western and Magnolia all lost.
On Friday, in boys action, Garden Grove got hammered by Tesoro 62-33 in Division 2A basketball, while Western fell 64-55 to Don Lugo.
In girls 1A play Saturday, Westminster defeated Lakewood 43-44. The Lions faced Fountain Valley Wednesday night in the Baron gym. The Lions defeated FV 54-46.
