The grass is green, the sun is out and the sound of bat hitting ball is echoing through the land.
High school baseball and softball are starting this week in the Garden Grove-Stanton-Westminster area, a region with a lot of diamond tradition to uphold.
Last year Garden Grove High’s softball team made it to the CIF finals and lost. The Pacifica baseball team made it to the finals and won. But another team could eclipse them both this spring.
The Pacifica softball team, which opens Saturday against Moorpark, is ranked not only number one in the CIF-SS Division 1, but also tops in the state by Cal-Hi Sports. The Mariners are loaded with pitching talent in a sport that is dominated by the lady in the circle.
Back and throwing hard for the Mariners are Kaylee Carlson and Kaley Winegarner. Those pitching aces could well lead PHS to its seventh CIF Southern Section title, but that’s not all. Neither will graduate this spring, and overall only two members of this year’s varsity are seniors.
Nearly all local softball and baseball teams will be in action by this weekend, many starting today (Thursday). Among those games in baseball will be Westminster at Whittier, Glenn at Santiago, Costa Mesa at Garden Grove and Pacifica at Loara.
