Garden Grove High School’s baseball team was a bit in the shadow of the school’s softball team last spring. Although Richard Cepeda’s 2012 Argonauts posted a 19-7 record, that wasn’t quite as visible as the softball team’s run to the CIF finals.
But the Argos are turning some heads in the early 2013 season, smashing their first three opponents by a combined score of 50-2.
Grove opened with a 21-0 win over Costa Mesa, then crushed Santa Ana Valley 21-1. That was followed by a relatively “close” 8-1 triumph over Whittier Christian. All those games came in the Newport Elks Tournament.
Now 3-0 with the best record in the Garden Grove-Stanton-Westminster area, the Argonauts are next in action on Tuesday against Santa Ana (2-1).
Four local baseball teams (Los Amigos, Rancho Alamitos, Westminster and Orange) are out of the gate with winning records so far.
In softball, Pacifica is the flagship program of the area, but the Mariners have opened a modest 1-1. The M’s lost 1-0 to Moorpark, then defeated West Ranch of Valencia 4-2 in the Best of the West Tournament.
Rebecca Lee is the top hitter for PHS in the early going, hitting .667 with one RBI and a double. Kaley Winegarner has struck out 15 batters in 12 innings.
Pacifica is in the MaxPrep Tournment of Champions this week at Mohave High School.
