Argos extend win streak to five

Garden Grove High’s baseball team and Pacifica’s softball team have emerged as the top teams to watch in local prep sports this spring.

The Argonauts (5-0) remained unbeaten with a 9-3 win over La Serna. Sean Grennon went 3-for-3 and scored three runs for the red-and-white. Rafael Ceja was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI.

Other area baseball teams with winning records through the weekend were Pacifica (3-2), Rancho Alamitos (3-1) and Westminster (3-2).

Pacifica, ranked number one in the state for softball,  may drop out of that spot after their one loss in the MaxPreps tournament at Mohave High. The Mariners won three games by a combined score of 25-1, but suffered a 7-3 loss to Mater Dei on Saturday.

Kaley Winegarner, one of Pacifica’s two ace pitchers, was rocked for three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The M’s rallied with three in the top of the third.

With MD ahead 4-3, freshman Katya Duvall came in to pitch for Pacifica in the fourth and was also roughed up, giving up three runs.  She shut the Monarchs out after that, and ended up yielding a total of six hits and four walks.

Pacifica’s season mark is now at 5-2, third best among Empire League teams.

Other Garden Grove-area softball teams with winning records so far are Garden Grove (3-1), Los Amigos (3-2) and Westminster (3-1-1).OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
