League play starts this week for some high school baseball and softball teams in the Garden Grove-Stanton-Westminster area.
Garden Grove League teams are starting this Friday, while the Empire League will commence on Wednesday. In the Golden West League action starts Friday.
The Argonauts of Garden Grove High have emerged as the top baseball team in the area, winning their first six games. Grove has a powerful batting order, led by Manny Segura, with 10 hits, 10 RBIs and two RBIs. He’s got a .625 average over six games.
Also hitting well for the red-and-white is Andrew Pactwa, batting .700 with seven hits, three RBIs and a double.
Orange is also quick out of the gate, posting a 5-2 mark. Chris DeLeon is batting .455 for the Panthers with 10 hits, two RBIs and eight runs scored.
On the softball side, Pacifica continues to be the top team in the area, despite suffering a 7-3 loss to Mater Dei in the MaxPreps Tournament at Mohave. The 5-2 Mariners are playing a tough pre-season schedule against nationally-ranked foes, but even Empire action will be rugged, with unbeaten Cypress (7-0) and Yorba Linda (4-0) to face.
GGL baseball action will start Friday with Bolsa Grande at Santiago, Los Amigos at Rancho Alamitos and La Quinta at Garden Grove. In the Golden West League, Orange will host Westminster and Magnolia will visit Santa Ana Valley in the Orange League.
On Tuesday, Grove will visit Los Amigos, while Rancho is at Bolsa and Santiago at La Quinta.
Wednesday baseball play will see Kennedy at Pacifica and Yorba Linda at Western in the Empire League. Magnolia will be at Century in the Orange League.
In softball action today (Thursday) Western will host Mater Dei in a non-league contest. Century will be at Bolsa Grande, Orange at Los Amigos and Westminster at La Quinta.
The North County Classic will be Garden Grove facing El Dorado.
On Tuesday, Empire League play opens with Western at Cypress.
In non-league games, Magnolia will visit Buena Park, and University will travel to Westminster. Pacifica will host Mira Costa and Magnolia is at Buena Park.
In the La Quinta Tournament, Westminster visits University, while Orange hosts Corona del Mar and Anaheim at La Quinta.
