On Tuesday, the surging Pacifica softball team clashed with the CIF’s number one-ranked team, Yorba Linda, and defeated the Mustangs 2-1.
Kaylee Carlson won her 11th game as she yielded only four hits and struck out five.
The Mariners scored the winning run in the top of the sixth. Faith Canfield went 2-for-2 and scored the Mariner run.
The win lifted PHS (5-1) into a tie for first place in the Empire League. Pacifica is now 18-5 overall and Yorba Linda 16-2. Both of the Mustangs’ losses are to Pacifica.
The two meet one more time in league play, on May 9 at the Mariners’ home field.
On Friday, Westminster will host Loara in a battle for the Golden West League softball lead. The Lions and Saxons have started off the GWL season with 2-0 marks and are considered the league’s top two teams.
Baseball play on Tuesday set up the big game this coming Tuesday, as Garden Grove visits Santiago in a baseball game that will probably determine the Garden Grove League title.
The Argos have the better over all record (14-2 compared to 8-5), but the Cavaliers won the first meeting, edging their hosts 3-2. They’re both 6-1 in the GGL going into that game.
Here’s a look at league races around the Garden Grove-Stanton-Westminster area.
Empire baseball: Yorba Linda and Cypress lead the pack; locals Pacifica and Western are in fourth and fifth place in a tough league.
Empire softball: Yorba Linda and Pacifica are on top, with good teams from Cypress and Kennedy not far behind. Western is in sixth place.
Garden Grove baseball: Almost certainly Garden Grove, Santiago and Rancho Alamitos will be the top three and make the playoffs.
Garden Grove softball: Garden Grove and Rancho Alamitos are atop the GGL. They’ll meet today (Thursday) at the Argo diamond in a battle for first.
Golden West baseball: Loara and Westminster are first and second with Orange fourth. Both the Lions and Panthers have good shots at post-season play.
Golden West softball: Loara and Westminster lead the league. Orange is tied for last.
Orange baseball: Magnolia (2-8 overall) is in fifth place in the six-team league.
Orange softball: Overall Magnolia is 1-6, but hasn’t played any league games yet. Savanna and Katella are tied for first.
