A new full-sized Walmart, along with 200 jobs, will soon be coming to Garden Grove’s major shopping area.
The new store will occupy 107,000 square feet at the west end of The Promenade center at Gilbert Street and Chapman Avenue.
Construction is already underway at the location, once home to a Costco membership store that is now operating on Garden Grove Boulevard at Main Street.
It’s expected to be open by the fall.
The store will feature general merchandise areas, including a full-service pharmacy, apparel and accessories, sporting goods, electronics, home furnishings, jewelry and health and beauty items, as well as a full line of groceries with a bakery, delicatessen, frozen food, meat, dairy and fresh produce sections.
“Garden Grove is thrilled to welcome a new, full-service Walmart to our community,” said Mayor Bruce Broadwater. “Not only does it bring shopping convenience and wider selection to the neighborhood, it brings needed jobs and important tax revenues for the city.”
As the store – to be one of the largest retail operations in the city – nears completion, a temporary hiring center will be opened nearby to employ about 200 people in a mix of full- and part-time positions.
The Promenade, originally opened as Orange County Plaza in 1956, is Garden Grove’s largest shopping center.
The intersection of Brookhurst Street and Chapman Avenue flourished as the major retail district for the area in the Sixties and Seventies, but later fell on hard times because of competition from regional malls and changing demographics.
Efforts to attract a Walmart – the world’s largest retail operation – to Garden Grove have been going on for years. Finally, a Walmart Neighborhood Market opened at Katella Avenue and Euclid Street last year.
