According to Lt. Jeff Nightengale of the Garden Grove Police Department. the man was shot after allegedly trying to run down two officers with his car.
The incident occurred in the area of Garden Grove and Beach boulevards after 8:16 p.m. Police say that undercover GGPD officers there were on a plainclothes assignment in a strip mall parking lot.
They noticed, said Lt. Nightengale, a vehicle enter the parking lot with a driver who was “acting suspiciously.” He was not the subject of the surveillance.
Concerned that the driver might cause a problem, they called for a marked police unit to respond and investigate. Two officers approached the vehicle, which was now in a parking stall.
As the officers got closer on foot to the car, according to Lt. Nightengale, the vehicle was quickly backed up and raced towards them. One of the officers fell as he moved out of the car’s path, while a second fired “multiple rounds” at the car, hitting the driver.
The wounded man was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange for treatment and surgery. None of the officers was injured.
The name of the suspect has not been released.
The Orange County District Attorney’s Office and the Garden Grove Police Department are investigating the incident jointly. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the GGPD at (714) 741-5800.
