According to Lt. Jeff Nightengale of the Garden Grove Police Department, officers took into custody a man identified as Drew or Colsten Stelp, 51, of Moreno Valley Friday afternoon.
Police describe the events in this way:
At around 2 p.m. the suspect knocked on the door of the home at 11422 Larkin Dr. in Garden Grove. A cleaning lady opened the door and saw the suspect, who was holding a bouquet of flowers.
He asked for the woman of the house by name, then allegedly forced his way in. Brandishing a knife, he used a dog leash to tie the cleaning lady up, say police.
The male homeowner arrived at home, and was also tied up, but managed to free himself and get a neighbor to call police.
Police were told that the home invader had drunk liquor and “swallowed a large amount of prescription medicine” he found in the house. He allegedly also took jewelry before fleeing in a blue pickup truck with a camper shell.
A countywide radio broadcast led to Newport Beach police locating the suspect car and going into pursuit. Spike strips were employed to stop the truck and the suspect was taken into custody.
The man showed signs of medical problems, so he was taken to Hoag Hospital for an apparent overdose of intoxicants.
Further investigation revealed that the suspect was the brother of the female homeowner. He was recently released from prison in Arizona, and there is some dispute over the family property.
The knife and jewelry were recovered.
Garden Grove police are asking anyone with additional information to call the GGPD at (714) 741-5800.
