Pacifica will face off with Yorba Linda for the Empire League title today (Thursday) on the Mariners’ diamond, thanks in large part to the pitching prowess of star hurler Kaylee Carlson.
Carlson tossed a two-hitter as the M’s defeated Cypress 5-0 Tuesday to improve to 23-5 overall and 10-1 in league, tied with the Mustangs, who blanked Kennedy 6-0 to set up the showdown. Yorba is 21-2 overall, but both their losses have come to Pacifica.
It was Carlson’s 15th win without a loss. She struck out six batters and walked only one. That performance followed a perfect game effort in last Thursday’s 7-0 win over Valencia in which she struck out 17 batters.
In Tuesday’s victory, Sydney Hart went 3-for-3 at the plate with a double, while Nicole Witt was 3-for-4, scoring two runs and hitting a double and a triple. Faith Canfield added a single, a double and two RBIs.
The Mariners are ranked eighth in the state and nation.
Other softball scores from Tuesday include La Quinta smacking Bolsa Grande 16-2 in Garden Grove League play. Rancho Alamitos stunned Garden Grove 11-0 in the first of two games for the league title. The second was scheduled for Wednesday at the Argo field (results too late for our deadline).
Also, in the Orange League, Katella beat Magnolia 9-3.
On the baseball side, Garden Grove High, which wrapped up the GGL title, improved to 20-3 overall and 13-1 in the GGL with a 17-6 smacking of Bolsa Grande. The Argonauts clinched the pennant with a 9-6 win over Rancho Alamitos on Friday.
For Grove, Chris Williams scored four runs and had four RBIs on a double and a home run.
Pacifica continued to battle for the Empire League baseball title. After Tuesday’s 6-3 win over Yorba Linda, the Mariners are 7-4 in league (15-10 overall) and one game behind first place Cypress.
PHS will finish its league season Friday hosting Yorba Linda.
In the Golden West League, Westminster lost 5-1 to Segerstrom.
