Walmart, the world’s biggest retailer, is set to make an even bigger footprint in the Garden Grove –Stanton-Westminster area.
At Tuesday’s meeting of the Stanton City Council, it was revealed that the Benton, Arkansas-based firm will be opening a Walmart Express store in Stanton. It will be at the former Freshia supermarket site on Beach Boulevard just north of Garden Grove Boulevard.
“It will be a full-service store,” according to City Manager James Box. Opening is expected for August in the Plaza on the Boulevard shopping center.
The store would be located about a mile north of an existing Walmart department store in Westminster, and a short distance from the Sam’s Club (also owned by Walmart) on Beach Boulevard at Lampson Avenue.
A Walmart Neighborhood Market opened recently at Katella Avenue and Euclid Street in Garden Grove. Construction has begun on a new Walmart department store in Garden Grove at the west end of The Promenade center on Chapman Avenue, west of Brookhurst Street. That store is also expected to open this summer.
Also Tuesday night, the city council heard a presentation on a proposal to align the city’s zoning codes with the general plan. Prominent among the changes was the use of mixed-use “overlay” zones that would allow combining commercial with residential uses.
The council approved the new zoning rules on a 4-0 vote. Councilman Brian Donahue was absent.
