Roused by a barking dog and the sight of an intruder in breaking into her house in the middle of the night, a 72-year-old Stanton grandmother opened fire with a .357 Magnum revolver Saturday, according to authorities.
Jan Cooper was on the phone to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department dispatcher when she saw the man trying to break in through a sliding glass door. She yelled at him to flee, then fired a single shot, which missed.
Brandon Perez, 31, who was on probation for burglary, was later arrested by sheriff’s deputies.
Cooper’s gun was legal and registered, according to Orange County Sheriff’s spokesman Jim Amormino.
She told authorities that she has owned guns since she was a teenager, and has years of practice at a shooting range with her husband, Bob, an 85-year-old veteran of World War II.
“I know her capabilities. I know what she can do if she has to,” he told reporters.
