It’s time to reach into the old mailbag, which actually means e-mail, fax and questions around Garden Grove these days.
Q: I don’t understand a sports bet I just made. Can you help me?
A: As you know, I don’t bet much on sports unless it’s an emotional bet like all those years I bet on the Ducks to win the Stanley Cup after they started in 1993. They never even made it to the playoffs most of those years. Guido was happy with me as they call that the sucker bet. Which reminds me, I’m going to see him on 7-11. Write me with any questions.
Now, to answer your question. You had the Chicago Blackhawks to win the Stanley Cup. At press time I don’t know who won it but I’ll assume it was Chicago over Boston.
You bought a $10 ticket (a while back) that pays $6.45. Now you say, that doesn’t seem like much of a win. Well, you also get back your $10 bet so you “win” $16.45. Get it?
Q: The Ducks should be in the Stanley Cup finals.
A: Not much of a question here but I agree with you. If they could just have won game seven against Detroit they would have played the Kings in a local Stanley Cup. It would have drawn the highest TV ratings ever and the Ducks would have gone on to glory.
Did they look ahead? I don’t think so but who knows. Darn it!
Q: Is there any game more exciting than hockey playoffs?
A: No. It’s like two gladiators playing to the death. I would like to see more scoring in hockey and eliminate offsides but even during the season it’s great to watch. Too bad the puck doesn’t show better on TV. They’ve tried everything they know of to highlight the puck but nothing worked.
Q: If I don’t bring it up, you won’t mention that Miami won the NBA championship, right”
A: I guess you are right. I just can’t stand it that they put together an All-Star team and then brag that they won two of the last three championships. Perhaps the Lakers have done that too but it’s okay because they are my team! Ok, a little hypocritical!
Q: Don’t you think the league wanted a seventh game of the NBA championship? I heard it meant millions of dollars for everyone! Do I hear conspiracy?
A: I hear this almost every year. How could San Antonio blow Game Six in the last seconds to set up a game seven? These players have way too much pride to do any of that. Plus they make too much money to be bought. Now, if you ask me if the league office and many other people involved with the league did an endzone/salsa dance when Miami pulled it out, yes. San Antonio players will tell you right now they had a chance to win it in game six but didn’t. Now they are losers, is their way of thinking.
Q: What do you think of Doc Rivers going to the Clippers?
A: I just can’t wrap my brain around it. Doc Rivers is a mainstay on the Celtics bench. I just can’t see him as a Clipper head coach! Besides, two of my favorite ex-Lakers were set for the job. I was hoping for Brian Shaw or Byron Scott. Now, Rivers will get $7 million a year! That’s more than I make writing this column.
Q: Can’t you do something about the Angels?
A: Hey, I got the highest payroll in baseball and the best players. We have the best manager and good food at the ballpark. What else can I do?
Heck, you and I could play and we’d be in last place. But actually, Houston is in last place and we are only 10 games behind Texas. What more do you want?
Q: What do you think about the Dodger’s Yasiel Puig? Do you think he will keep this torrid pace up?
A: Sure. He will hit .500 for his career with 60 homers a year and will throw out 4 base runners a game from right field.
