Last season, Garden Grove High School’s football team had the advantage of playing eight of its 10 regular season games in the friendly confines of its on-campus stadium.
But for 2013, the Argonauts – who were the CIF-SS Southern Division runners-up last year – will have to hit the road, more often than not, traveling for six games.
Grove will open against Westminster at the Lion’s Bill Boswell Field in what has become a traditional first game. That contest will be on Sept. 6.
Another regular pre-league contest will pit Grove against Woodbridge on Sept. 13 for the Argo home opener.
Long-time former Garden Grove League rival Pacifica will host the Argos at Bolsa Grande Stadium on Sept. 20. On Sept. 26, Katella will host Grove at Glover Stadium in La Palma Park in Anaheim.
The pre-league campaign will close out on Oct. 10 against University High at the Irvine High School Stadium.
GGL action will start for the red-and-white on Oct. 11 against Bolsa Grande at the Matadors’ home stadium. Next league opponent will be La Quinta (also at Bolsa Stadium) on Oct. 18.
The first league home game will be Oct. 24 as the Argonauts host Los Amigos. That will be followed by another home game on Nov. 1 hosting Santiago. The regular season will conclude on Nov. 7 against Grove’s oldest rival, Rancho Alamitos, at Bolsa Grande Stadium.
Pacifica High School’s 2013 football season is front-loaded with tough opponents, as the Mariners prepare to later take on powerful opponents in the Empire League.
In fact, two of Pacifica’s first four opponents were CIF finalists in 2012.
The Mariners will get an early jump on the season with an Aug. 30 opener when they travel to Newport Harbor High to play Corona del Mar in a non-league game. The Sea Kings are the defending CIF-SS Southern Division champs.
Pacifica will be at home at Bolsa Grande Stadium for the next two contests. Bellflower comes to Garden Grove on Sept. 9, and then it’s Segerstrom on Sept. 13.
Garden Grove, the Southern Division runner-up last year, will visit Pacifica at Bolsa on Sept. 20 in the final pre-league game for the Mariners.
Empire League play will start on Sept. 27 against Kennedy in a game to be played at Western High’s Handel Stadium. On Oct. 4 the M’s come back home to face Tustin.
On Oct. 10, Pacifica visits Western High, and on Oct. 17 travels to Placentia to play Valencia.
The M’s finish the regular season with a pair of home games. On Oct. 24 Pacifica will face off against Cypress, and the regular season concludes Nov. 2 against Yorba Linda.
